Registration Information
Every student is required to be registered at AUM when completing course work of any type, including but not limited to thesis work, co-op, making up an incomplete grade, auditing, or when use is made of the instructional staff and/or facilities of the university. A student is considered registered when his or her class schedule is entered into the BANNER system. A student is responsible for all tuition and fees at this point (See the Registration Cancellation Policy under Costs & Aid). If a student wishes to drop or withdraw from all or any of the courses, he or she must follow the procedures for drops/withdrawal identified in this catalog.
Priority Registration
Access to registration is governed by the principle of earned hours. Students shall be allowed to register in the following order Graduates, Seniors, Juniors, Freshmen, then New Admits and Transient students. AUM recognizes that certain student populations are impacted by specific obligations and/or other commitments to the University. Students in these approved populations are permitted to register prior to the hour-based principle. The approved special populations include Student Athletes, currently serving Military members (Active, Reserve, Guard), ROTC students, students in the University Honors Program, students registered with the Center for Disability Services, SWOT Team, Orange Jacket Society, Campus Activities Executive Board, and the Student Government Association Executive Board. Priority registration dates for each semester are published in the Academic Calendar.
Auditing Privilege
The privilege of auditing courses is restricted. Auditing of a lecture course or the lecture part of a combined lecture and laboratory course may be granted with the approval of the student’s dean and the head of the department in which the course is offered. The auditing privilege is rarely permitted in laboratory or combined lecture and laboratory courses.
Auditors are admitted and enrolled by the Registrar’s Office. They are listed on class rolls, but they are not required to participate in classroom discussions, take tests or final examinations or make reports. However, regular attendance at class meetings is required. The grade of AU (Audit) is awarded to those meeting the above requirements. The grade of NR (No Grade Reported) is assigned for those not meeting the attendance requirement. Auditors who have not been admitted to the university must apply through the Registrar’s Office. Auditors who are not regularly enrolled students will register on the last day of the final registration period. A fee will be charged for auditing a course. Regularly enrolled students carrying 12 hours or more and members of the faculty and staff may audit lecture courses without payment of the auditing fee with approval of the head of the department in which the course is offered and the dean; however, the regular registration process must be completed.
Co-requisites and Prerequisites
Course co-requisites or prerequisites are listed with the course description in the catalog. It is the responsibility of the student to know these requirements and to comply with them when registering for classes. Any waiver of these requirements must be approved by the instructor of the course and/or the dean of the college in which the course is taught.
Course Restrictions
Some courses have restrictions that preclude some students from registering for these courses. For example, there are level restrictions (i.e., undergraduate or graduate), major restrictions (i.e., only certain majors are allowed to take courses), class restrictions (e.g., only seniors are permitted to register for a course), and other restrictions. Students should check with their advisor prior to registration to determine if a course has a restriction.
Holds
A student may be denied the opportunity to register or make schedule adjustments if the student is in default or is identified as being in default on any payment. Holds may be placed on students by the Provost's Office, Admissions, AUM Bookstore, Office of Student Accounts, Office of Financial Aid, Housing, AUM Library, Registrar's Office, and/or Campus Police.
Schedule Adjustments
Add: A student may add a course prior to the second meeting of the class for full-term and half-term classes. After these periods, no student may register for a class except by permission of the head of the department or dean of the school in which the class is taught.
Drop/Withdrawal: Drop/Withdrawal occurs when a student decides to withdraw from courses for which he or she is registered. If a student withdraws prior to the day identified as the fifth day of classes (for the full term) or the second day of classes (for a half term), a drop occurs, and the courses will be deleted from the transcript. Withdrawal from classes after these dates will result in a student receiving a grade of W (Withdrawal).
The deadline for dropping/withdrawing from a course is specified on in the academic calendar. In order to withdraw before the deadline, a student must complete the process in the school of his or her major/advisor. After the last day for refunds, a grade of W will be recorded on the student’s official academic record.
Students should consult with their academic advisor and/or Office of Financial Aid prior to dropping/withdrawing from classes to determine if there are financial implications.
Late Withdrawal/Medical Withdrawal
When a student, as a result of exceptional or emergency circumstances, is forced to withdraw from a course after the withdrawal date for the term, he or she may petition, in writing, to the Office of the Associate Provost. The request should be addressed to the Associate Provost and must include a completed Withdrawal Authorization Form, supporting documentation of the exceptional or emergency circumstances, and the date the student was last able to attend class.
